We were called out to Finnieston in the West End of Glasgow last week because a boiler had refused to start.  The home owner only discovered this after running a bath in the evening.  They dipped their toe in to see if it was too hot and found that instead, it was freezing cold.  They had run a full bath of cold water because the boiler had not turned on to heat the water.

They inspected the boiler to discover an error code flashing up.  Armed with this new information, they called JSL Heating, told us about the code which we could quickly isolate as an issue with the extractor fan.

You see, when a boiler burns the gases to create heat, it still produces a number of harmful end gases that need to be taken away.  This goes down the flue and into the atmosphere.  Because these gases are quite harmful and dangerous, the very first thing that a boiler does is activate the fan in the flue to help ventilate the gases away.  If the fan does not activate, then the rest of the boiler start up procedure does not activate.

And that is exactly what happened to our customer.  The motor that drives the fan had broken.  We were able to replace the motor and confirm that there were no other issues.  The boiler is now back to full working order and the West End customer can get back to having a hot bath.
